adminThe signing of the unity accord brought to an end the disturbances that cost lives in Matabeleland and Midlands provinces. President Mugabe of the then Zanu-PF and PF-Zapu leader, the late Vice President Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo held ten marathon meetings culminating in the final signing of the unity accord. This historic day should therefore not be taken for granted because it was on this day that the nation was brought together. Zimbabwe today enjoys peace and tranquility because of the magnanimity of President Mugabe and Dr Nkomo.
Yesterday as the nation commemorated Unity Day, we want to believe, people took time to reflect on the journey we have travelled as a nation for the past 24 years since the coming together of the two parties that brought about the country’s independence. We have gone through turbulent times and what quickly comes to mind is the hyper- inflationary environment we went through as a nation. At the height of the economic challenges, families could not afford to buy even the basic food stuffs and this is the time when the country witnessed unprecedented flight of skilled manpower to neighbouring countries such as South Africa and Botswana as people sought greener pastures.
We strongly believe that as a nation we emerged from these challenges much stronger and more determined to drive our economy forward. The challenges that we went through have proved that nothing is insurmountable as long as we are united as a nation and remain focused. The unity of purpose that has bound us together during the past 24 years, much to the chagrin of our detractors, should continue to be nurtured for the good of the present and future generations. The country’s enemies are trying all the tricks in the book to sow seeds of disunity and it is the duty of each and every
Zimbabwean to guard jealously the unity that has brought this stability and peace that we are enjoying.
The “moment of madness” should never be witnessed again in this country. The people could have political differences and it is their right under our constitution to belong to political parties of their choice but
Zimbabwe should always come first. Zimbabweans while enjoying the freedom of association should always remember that they are Zimbabweans first and foremost. What this entails is that when it comes to issues of sovereignty, we, as a nation should have a shared vision of what we want Zimbabwe to be. We have an obligation as the present generation to bequeath to future generations, a nation that the citizens will be proud of. The industries must be running, food should be in abundance, services should be of the highest quality, people should have access to good health services, education and other such services. This is only possible if as a nation we remain united and commit ourselves to working hard for the good of our families and the nation at large. We want to once again implore each and every Zimbabwean to play his or her part in preserving the unity.
