Editorial comment: Let’s support our future stars

FILM-MAKING is a billion-dollar industry known for job creation.

All over the world, it continues to churn out international celebrities.

Some of these stars continue to touch the hearts of many while many have become role models.

Proper structures are needed for the nurturing of young and raw talent.

Lack of structures, and regulation, have led to stunted growth in the domestic film industry.

And, once we realise its full potential, film and television have the capacity to touch the hearts of many, transform the lives of many and generate revenue.

Not only is the industry now a conveyor belt of international stars but it continues to create millions of jobs.

Employment creation, and refreshing movies, which appeal to the people, can only come out once this sector is well regulated.

Nollywood, Bollywood and Hollywood instantly come into mind when we mention the issue of professionalism and regularisation.

If we bring some professionalism to our local film industry, then we have a golden chance of propelling it to dizzy heights.

In Zimbabwe, film-makers have been lamenting over the lack of proper structures.

Top local film-makers have, over the years, been complaining over poor regulation of the sector.

However, this has not dampened the dreams of aspiring actors and producers to make both a mark and an impact.

Top film-makers, and producers, have emerged from this country, despite all these challenges.

Last weekend, a 12-year-old actor, Tyler Gurure, was crowned Best Actor at the just-ended Zimbabwe International Film Festival.

He had a starring role in the 2021 feature film, titled ‘Nevanji’ as Nashe.

His exploits, and the role he played, showed that the industry could do well, if well regulated.

For his rare talent, Gurure carries on his young shoulders the next generation of actors’ hopes.

He also made history as the young actor to win the prestigious award.

Not only did he make a huge impression but he was crowned on merit, according to producers and fellow film-makers.

This is the kind of support and love young actors require to ensure they reach their potential.

Like any other discipline, young stars should be helped to ensure they reach their potential.

The winning mentality should always define them to ensure that we raise a new generation of victors.

This can only be achieved once we support our future stars from grassroots until they become international stars.

The case of Gurure should come as a challenge to other parents/guardians who don’t support their children.

The policy makers are now tasked to ensure they create structures which can enable young stars to realise their potential.

This comes in the form of training, grooming and moral support.

Ambitious stars should be allowed to fulfil their dreams with moral and material support guaranteed.

As they say, there is need to catch these stars when they are young and show them the right direction they should take.

The future lies in our youngsters and there is need to support them.
