EDITORIAL COMMENT: Munetsi now a proper role model

SOME world renowned footballers are known for their extravagant lifestyles.

Off field drama has become their middle name. Their penchant for expensive wheels, wrist watches and jewellery is well known.

However, the majority of them die as paupers.

Others have seen their promising careers ending prematurely.

In major leagues, footballers earn millions, which need to be properly managed. These “obscene” earnings can blight their vision if they don’t manage them.

Former Tottenham, AC Milan and Barcelona player, Kevin-Prince Boateng, instantly comes to mind for his extravagant lifestyle.

While at Tottenham, he once splashed cash on three cars – a Lamborghini, Hummer and a Cadillac – all in one day, to make himself happy.

He now regrets his actions.

Impulse buying and splashing money on super cars is still common among players plying their trade in highly paying leagues.

There are some players who spent fortunes on booze, women and gambling. Being role models, footballers are expected to be disciplined and humble.

Athletes need to be responsible figures who can inspire young kids.

This has been lacking among many athletes. Overseas, cases of footballers being caught offside are on the increase.

Some are now spending much of their time in the courts of law, rather than the football pitch, answering to cases of rape, battery and tax evasion.

Manchester United young forward Mason Greenwood is currently in trouble for allegedly abusing his girlfriend.

The same goes for Manchester City defender Benjamin Mendy who is facing several rape cases.

On home soil, the script is the same.

Some PSL players have been nabbed for drug peddling, theft and assault cases. Such cases continue to make sad reading.

In yesterday’s issue, we carried an inspiring front page story about Warriors midfielder Marshall Munetsi, who tied the knot with his long-time sweetheart, Nyasha Makove.

Leading the praises was Warriors manager, Wellington Mpandare, who hailed Munetsi as a role model.

The Stade Reims utility player has set a good example that athletes can also lead a better life.

Discipline, focus and self-control have made him the star he is today.

This alone makes him a role model among our youths and aspiring footballers. The world over, lack of discipline has proved to be costly among athletes.

Proper grooming and focus have made footballers’ careers worthwhile as is the case with Munetsi.

Grooming starts at household level.

This has been lacking among some athletes who are reckless with their lives.

Athletes should know their value.

Talent alone is not enough as discipline is needed to usher athletes to stardom.

While footballers’ careers are short-lived, there is a need for athletes to invest while the sun still shines.

Marshall and other players like Marvelous Nakamba, Knowledge Musona have been preparing for life after their playing careers.

This can be attained once players engage professional handlers and agents.

Players alone cannot make it to the top without proper handlers who are firm and resolute.

Discipline, focus and determination can make our athletes role models.
