PRESIDENT Mugabe’s election as First Deputy Chair of the African Union on Thursday has left an egg on the faces of the country’s detractors especially in the West.
The move demonstrates a strong sense of African solidarity exhibited by member states.
The election of President Mugabe has also rendered futile a decision by the European Union not to invite him to a summit of the two blocs slated for Belgium in April.
The line-up announced by outgoing AU chair Prime Minister of Ethiopia Hailemariam Dessalegn in Addis Ababa saw Mauritania landing the top post with Zimbabwe of course picking up the first deputy chair.
DRC landed the second deputy while Nigeria sat for the third deputy post.
President Mugabe’s election to the post, which was seconded by Southern Africa, positions him to take over the AU chairmanship next year.
The confidence shown by the AU member states on the leadership of President Mugabe is a lesson pushed by our continental leadership that African brothers and sisters who fought side by side to defeat colonialism will never forsake each other at the behest of the divisive Western countries.
The developments in Ethiopia on Thursday were also a display of the objectives of the AU, which among others are to achieve greater unity and solidarity between the African countries and the people of Africa.
It was also an exhibition that African countries are ready to achieve objectives number one and two of the continental body, which are to defend the sovereignty, territorial integrity and independence of its member states as well as accelerating the political and socio-economic integration of the continent.
While we are aware of the existence of some puppets among us, some holding leadership positions such as the president of Botswana, Khama Ian Khama who panders to the whims of the West, we take solace that there are still some who are ready to withstand the pressures of the imperialists.
The election of President Mugabe as the deputy chair is a display of insight and progressive leadership.
For a long time President Mugabe has been outstanding in the fight against neo-colonialism.
He is an example of a true son of the soil and a political giant that has come up with progressive economic policies such as indigenisation and economic empowerment.
History also has it that he is the only leader in Africa who gave his people land in the process courting the ire of the British and the Americans, but he never relented and now the people of Zimbabwe are proud owners of their strategic natural resource.
We therefore urge the African leadership to continue getting rid of the vestiges of colonialism and put our people on the right path of self- rule.
