Editorial Comment: PSL, clubs must make 2025 season a game-changer

SO, the 2025 Castle Lager Premier Soccer League (PSL) season burst into life yesterday with flamboyant newcomers Scottland facing old timers Triangle who were making yet another return to the top-flight having been relegated into the Eastern Region Division One.

Football remains the country’s flagship sport by a country mile, hence the buzz that has followed what has refreshingly been a busy transfer market, with teams seeking to boost their playing personnel.

While they might be the league’s newboys, Scottland have flexed their financial muscles and have overhauled their initial squad, bringing on board a host of high-profile players.

In fact, the arrival on the football landscape of teams like Scottland, Simba Bhora and MWOS in the last two years has jolted traditional giants Dynamos, Highlanders and CAPS United onto a re-think and to change their approach to the game.

Now CAPS United seem to have gone back to basics and, they often used to do at the turn of the millennium, Makekepepe have looked beyond Zimbabwe’s borders recruiting talent from Ghana and the Democratic Republic of Congo while DeMbare and Bosso have revisited their junior ranks for young talent to anchor their rebuilding exercises.

While on paper 2025 looks to be exciting times in the PSL, we believe both the league’s management and clubs owe it to their brands to make the year a game-changer.

This is because the domestic top-flight has gradually lost its soul over the last five years and the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic, which forced global sport into a hiatus in 2020, did not help matters.

With the coming in of a new leadership at ZIFA, it is a time for stakeholders to rally together and transform the country’s number one sport into a true spectacle of unity, passion, and excellence.

The PSL will also soon have a new leadership but those manning the secretariat are also a group of passionate football enthusiasts and resultantly, the possibilities for positive change have never been greater.

This season presents a unique opportunity for all involved —clubs, players, referees, fans, sponsors and administrators —to elevate the beautiful game and set the stage for what could become a benchmark year for Zimbabwean football.

But for that to happen, clubs must embrace the spirit of competitiveness, implement the ethos of FIFA’s Fair Play and strive to bring their best to every match.

Football fans have become more discerning and if they feel they are not being offered full value for their money, they will shy away.

After all, sport market researchers have established the growing shifts in an era where digital technology has brought with it new challenges for institutions like the PSL.

A survey on the African sports industry in 2025, uncovered opportunities, challenges, and market developments afflicting games like football.

It highlights the growing impact of digital transformation, investment growth, and grassroots development and governance reform, offering valuable insights for rights holders, investors, sponsors, brands, sports federations, and service providers

“With technology and investment playing a defining role in African sports, this report provides a roadmap for stakeholders looking to capitalise on emerging opportunities while addressing persistent challenges,” reads part of the report.

In our case fans want to see tactical brilliance, innovative coaching, and the nurturing of homegrown talent that inspires national pride.

Teams must aim to surpass the ordinary and strive for excellence, making every game worth watching.

Players are the heart and soul of football. They must commit to applying themselves fully on and off the field, demonstrating discipline, professionalism, and sportsmanship.

The 2025 season should be remembered for thrilling performances, extraordinary goals, and unforgettable moments showcasing the best Zimbabwean talent.

Of course, football is a game of passion that is highly emotive but that passion must never spill over into violence or disorder. This year, all stakeholders must commit to creating a safe and welcoming environment for everyone.

Let the various football venues be areas where families can come and spend time as has been shown at Queens Sports Club or Harare Sports Club when cricket and rugby are being played.

Fans, clubs, and law enforcement must work together to ensure that hooliganism is rooted out entirely.

We also believe that referees must be the beacons of upholding the integrity of the game. In 2025, match officials must strive for absolute fairness and impartiality, ensuring that every decision is made with integrity and professionalism—a level playing field fosters respect and credibility, which are essential for the sport’s growth.

Corruption and bribery scandals have no place in football and in any sport. Clubs, administrators, and stakeholders must uphold the highest ethical standards to protect the sanctity of the game.

Transparency and accountability will be crucial in restoring and maintaining the trust of fans and players alike.

Football is more than just a game; it is a way of life that teaches values like teamwork, respect, and resilience. This season, all participants must embrace the spirit of fair play and demonstrate these values in every interaction, whether on the field, in the stands, or behind the scenes.

Their traditional sponsors Delta Beverages via the Castle Lager and the Chibuku Super Cup have an incredible opportunity to make 2025 a game-changer, through targeted fan engagement programs, community outreach, and promotional activities.
