EDITORIAL COMMENT: Shut down the deadly trade in illicit brews

THE continued sale of illicit alcoholic brews over the counter in some bars and drinking spots is a disturbing trend that deserves the strongest condemnation from all sectors of society.
What is even more worrying is that some unscrupulous proprietors are knowingly stocking and selling these dangerous concoctions purely for profit, with little regard for the devastating consequences on consumers, particularly young people.
Alcohol, when abused, already presents significant social and health challenges. The situation becomes even more dangerous when people consume unregulated and illicit brews whose ingredients, production standards and safety cannot be verified.
Time and again, communities have witnessed tragic incidents where people have suffered severe health complications, permanent disabilities and even death after consuming illicit alcoholic drinks.
The pursuit of profit should never come before human life. Yet some bar owners appear willing to sacrifice the health and future of their customers for a few extra dollars. Such conduct is, not only irresponsible, but morally reprehensible.
Businesses exist to provide goods and services while complying with the law and protecting consumers.
Those who deliberately sell illicit brews are effectively gambling with people’s lives.
The greatest victims of this dangerous trade are often young people. Many youths, attracted by the cheap prices of these illegal beverages, find themselves trapped in cycles of alcohol dependency and substance abuse.
Instead of investing their energy in education, entrepreneurship, sports and nation-building, some end up wasting their productive years under the influence of intoxicating substances.
Every community dreams of nurturing a generation of responsible, productive and healthy young citizens.
However, that dream is being undermined by individuals who view youths merely as customers to exploit. By flooding the market with illicit brews, these traders are contributing to social decay, family breakdowns, increased crime and deteriorating public health.
Parents, guardians, churches, schools and community leaders have a critical role to play in condemning this practice. Communities must refuse to normalise the sale and consumption of illegal alcohol. Silence only emboldens offenders. Residents should report establishments suspected of selling illicit brews so that the necessary action can be taken before more lives are destroyed.
Bar operators and liquor outlet owners must also conduct serious self-introspection. Short-term financial gains can never compensate for the damage caused when customers lose their health, livelihoods or even their lives after consuming unsafe products.
Responsible business people understand that sustainable profits are built on integrity, compliance with regulations and respect for human life.
At the same time, authorities must intensify awareness campaigns on the dangers associated with illicit alcohol consumption.
Many consumers may not fully appreciate the risks they expose themselves to whenever they buy suspiciously cheap alcoholic beverages from unlicensed or non-compliant outlets.
Public education remains a crucial weapon in the fight against this menace.
However, awareness alone is not enough. The law must bite. Law enforcement agencies should descend heavily on all individuals and businesses found manufacturing, distributing or selling illicit brews. Routine inspections must be strengthened, while intelligence gathering should be enhanced to identify suppliers and distribution networks behind these illegal products.
Those caught on the wrong side of the law must face the full consequences of their actions. Leniency will only encourage repeat offenders and attract new players into this lucrative but deadly business. Meaningful penalties send a strong message that society will not tolerate activities that endanger public health and safety.
The battle against illicit brews is a collective responsibility.
Consumers must make informed choices, business owners must prioritise ethical conduct, communities must remain vigilant and law enforcers must act decisively. The future of our youths and the health of our citizens are too important to be sacrificed on the altar of greed.
As a society, we must stand united against the sale of illicit brews.
Human life is priceless.
No amount of profit can justify exposing citizens to harmful substances. The time for action is now.
Those involved in this illegal trade must either abandon it or be prepared to face the full force of the law.
Only through a coordinated and uncompromising approach can we protect our communities, safeguard our youths and build a healthier nation for generations to come.
