Editorial comment: There’s so much we can learn from Macheso

TODAY, we celebrate one of our living legends in showbiz.

This man is none other than sungura ace Alick Macheso.

He turns 55 tomorrow.

As expected, his birthday will not pass unnoticed.

The sungura virtuoso, who is the people’s choice entertainer, continues to touch the hearts of many through his music.

For the first time in years, the superstar has decided to open up about his upbringing, religion, resentment and the agony of being dumped at a young age.

Now a household name, philanthropist, role model and father-figure, Macheso is a living legend who sings about personal experiences.

He experienced most of the things he sings about and this alone makes him a rare preacher who teaches people from experience.

A lyrical genius and musical genius, Macheso is, indeed, a man of the people.

He appears on the mission to soothe bleeding hearts, and cheer spirits, using his music.

He churns out stuff, which has substance, a rarity on the local musical landscape.

Macheso has redefined local showbiz and his Midas Touch makes him the people’s favourite.

After opening up about his poor upbringing in this issue, especially the ill-treatment he received at a young age and being raised by the uncles, Macheso’s fairytale should be well documented and archived to inspire future generations.

The sad reality in Zimbabwe is that we tend to undermine our living legends.

We pretend to love them when they are gone yet we can’t tap into their wisdom, when they are alive, to ensure that we learn from them.

Macheso’s life history, the trials and tribulations he shares in today’s edition, clearly show that we should always cherish our living legends.

Living legends, in whatever discipline, can easily shape our society into the kind of country that we want to live in, if we utilise their wisdom.

In life, it’s very easy to learn from a person whom we can easily relate to and know pretty well.

There is nothing wrong in respecting our legends who have seen it all and experienced it in life.

One of these people is Baba Sharo, a humble man and a creative genius, who continues to win the hearts of many, with each passing day.

With all eyes on him this weekend, it’s not too late for us to tap into his experience and genius for the sake of a better musical fraternity for us.

In every field, there are living legends that we undermine yet they can easily change our lives.

This is the case with Macheso, who might appear a humble man, yet he is an oasis of knowledge.

As a nation, we need to cherish our heroes/heroines while they are still alive and give them their flowers, which they deserve.

We should always cherish and respect our elders and heroes in their lifetime.

Macheso is one of the icons and we only say happy 55th birthday to our living legend.
