The massive turnout at the Doek & Slay event held at Alexandra Sports Club on Sunday showed the good results that can come from good planning for such mass outdoor events.
The organisers started planning for the event in January and they had three full months to prepare for their show.
They started selling the tickets in January and this meant that they avoided the chaos that we usually see when people scramble for tickets at the gates.
They invested in the best sound system possible and on Saturday, a day before the show, it was very clear that they had ticked all the boxes when it comes to preparations.
We say well done to them.
The result was the huge record-breaking attendance with more than 10 000 women converging at Alex Sports Club for the mega party.
It always feels good to see our people having fun and on Sunday, the women who attended the Doek & Slay event really had a lot of fun.
We want to hail the organisers for investing their faith in local talent for their musical acts.
We have seen this tendency by some organisers of outdoor events to invest in foreign musical acts, especially the South African artists.
Now and again, these artists have come here, picked their fat pay cheque and done nothing to justify the decision by the promoters to invest in their act.
The impression this was giving was that our local artists were not good enough to draw the crowds for such shows.
However, on Sunday, the organisers of the Doek & Slay event went local and invested in Jah Prayzah and Feli Nandi and it worked wonders.
The initiative, to gather thousands of women at one place and entertain them, has been a huge success.
Each edition has also created business opportunities judging by the increase in the number of stallholders who are selling their wares at the event.
The organisers are saying they are taking the event to all corners of the country and that is the right thing to do.
We are told that the next one will be in Bulawayo and there will be similar shows in Gweru and Mutare.
There is no doubt in our minds that those shows will be successful.
The organisers have a good template and their dedication to professionalism has seen their event become the hottest ticket in the country when it comes to entertainment.
They have shown that when you have a good concept, people will be willing to pay even a premium for a ticket to attend the event.
It’s refreshing to see a new crop of young promoters arriving on the scene and showing us that things can be done differently and successfully.
Our entertainment scene needed a bit of shake-up and the Doek & Slay organisers have done just that.
They need our support because they are doing something good.
