We find it quite ironic that the European bloc that refused to heed Sadc’s call for the lifting of the ruinous sanctions regime, now says it will be guided by Sadc’s call on the harmonised elections.
For those who may have missed it, the EU ambassador to South Africa Roeland van de Geer over the weekend said Brussels would lift the sanctions regime if the Sadc Observer Mission declares the harmonised elections free and fair.
“If the process goes well, we will suspend (sanctions) and I am sure they will be removed. We don’t have the right to continue with that if the elections are acceptable,” van de Geer said.
Really?
Who, in the first place, gave you the “right” to impose sanctions on Zimbabwe Mr Ambassador when at international law, and in terms of the UN charter, all nations are equal?
It’s clear you have a colonially subsumed illusory sense of entitlement to interfere in our internal affairs.
We will not brook that condescending attitude.
It is worth noting that you begged for an opportunity to “observe” our elections, which request was flatly declined by the Government despite your spirited attempts to worm your way into our electoral processes by proxy.
Mr Ambassador your bloc is so discredited when it comes to Zimbabwean affairs that allowing your observers would have been akin to deploying MDC-T election agents. There is no prize for guessing what your verdict would have been since your wards are headed for defeat.
We also find it quite ironic that you do not see the ridiculousness of talking a free and fair poll in the same breath with your ruinous economic sanctions regime that was imposed to influence voting patterns.
The elections can never be free and fair with sanctions in place.
We, however, hope our brothers in Sadc will not be taken in by the EU’s ruse. The bloc can’t and should not be allowed to observe our elections by proxy.
Their game plan is quite clear.
Miffed by President Mugabe and Zanu-PF’s insistence on a peaceful poll, and hamstrung by their failure to point to any violent incidents, the MDC-T and its allies are not working to win the polls, but to discredit the outcome which they know will not be in their favour.
This explains the litany of the MDC-T’s complaints from the voters roll, so-called media and security sector reforms to the court challenge against special voting, whose delays were ironically caused by the MDC formations’ own predilection for litigation.
The EU hopes that if its plan to discredit the polls succeeds, and Sadc issues a subversive report, then the illegal European sanctions will be given an African face as they will be maintained at the “recommendation’’ of Sadc.
The stage will then be set for pushing for regime change behind the facade of the region.
We hope Sadc stands put on notice.
The EU’s latest ruse will not fool us and the only morally justifiable and legally acceptable path is for the European bloc to immediately and unconditionally lift its sanctions regime and leave us to chat our destiny in peace.
