EDITORIAL: MBEU HAS PUT HIMSELF IN A MESS

AFRO-FUSION artist Ashton “Mbeu” Nyahora is in trouble after he was issued with a warrant of arrest —four months after he was involved in an accident in which he is being accused of negligent driving.

The accident happened in Harare on New Year’s Day.

In the last four months, there have been attempts by the motorist, whose car was hit and damaged by a vehicle which was being driven by Mbeu, for the two parties to resolve the dispute.

However, Patikayi Murisa, who was driving a Peugeot 407, which was hit and damaged by Mbeu’s car at the corner of Harare Drive and Borrowdale Road, said the musician has been giving him a raw deal for four months.

Patikayi Murisa, who was driving a Peugeot 407, claims Mbeu was responsible for the crash and has not been picking up his calls since the accident

He said it has been four months of hell for him because Mbeu has not been picking up his calls after he caused the accident.

Murisa said he expected Mbeu to act as a celebrity and he took it for granted that the musician would cooperate and help him repair his car.

It was only after Mbeu was issued with a warrant of arrest, said Murisa, that he started cooperating with him.

The two parties are now expected to meet at a police station in Harare today.

Mbeu claims he could not cooperate with Murisa, just after the accident, because he was recovering from some of the injuries he suffered in that crash.

We can give him the benefit of doubt.

But, with all due respect, we expected him to answer his phone and, if he could find the strength to post on social media about the accident, then he clearly had the strength to pick up the call from Murisa.

By avoiding Murisa, when he desperately wanted him to meet his side of the bargain, Mbeu gave the impression that he was a man who could be trusted.

That is a bad tag to carry when you are a celebrity.

This accident was not a minor crash.

It was a major accident because the damage to both cars was very extensive.

It should have been reported to the police because that is what should happen whenever a major accident, like this one, occurs.

The police have been very clear in their public messages that failure to report a road traffic accident within 24 hours is a serious offence.

In this case, both Mbeu and Murisa know that they were wrong not to report the accident to the police.

They chose to strike a gentleman’s agreement to deal with the damages to their vehicles.

Unfortunately, Mbeu did not meet his side of the bargain and today the two will be at the police station.

This is what they should have done four months ago when the accident occured.
