THERE has been outrage over a video of a kombi driver who appeared to suggest that some women are raped because of the way they are dressed.
He appeared to suggest that a woman can provoke rape because of the way that she is dressed.
In a way, the kombi driver appeared to suggest that a man can rape a woman and justify his foolish and criminal actions by suggesting that she was not appropriately dressed.
That’s as shocking as it is unacceptable.
We are happy that the feedback has been brutal towards the kombi driver because what he said is unacceptable.
Rape is inhuman and there is no way that it can be justified.
It is criminal and it’s very clear that the kombi driver needs counselling so that he understands that there is no way that anyone can justify rape and blame it on the way a woman was dressed.
The disappointment which we have shown, collectively as a nation, has shown that we are united as a nation in agreeing that this is just unacceptable.
We should never triviliase rape.
It’s a horrible crime as it violates the rights of women to choose who they want to have an affair with.
At H-Metro, we took a stand a long time ago that we will give prominence to rape cases.
Our reporting, in the last two years, has given a lot of mileage to stories which highlight the rape cases which are reported throughout our country.
We have always featured such stories on our prominent pages, including our cover, and we have shamed the rapists by publishing their pictures and their stories.
The whole reason we have been doing this is to cast a spotlight on rape cases. Our mission has been to show that this is evil and has no place in our society.
We have encouraged conversations among our readers on issues related to rape and the overwhelming message has been that this is unacceptable.
We have seen that the kombi driver has since apologised for his foolish words.
At least, he now knows that this is unacceptable and he has learnt his lesson that rape cannot be justified.
We heard some of his colleagues, who were in the background, appearing to support what the kombi driver was saying in trying to justify his stupid views.
We know there are many like these people in this country and we are happy that the backlash has shown them that their views are misplaced.
Men have to respect women and understand that they have a right to choose who they can share their bodies with.
Men have to understand that they can’t impose themselves on women no matter their dressing.
The kombi driver was wrong and we are glad that, as a nation, we have shown him that we don’t accept his misplaced views.
His colleagues, who were supporting him in the background, were also wrong.
