THE case of a religious leader, who is based in Kuwadzana, Harare, and is being accused of being part of a gang which killed ELEVEN of his relatives at his shrine in his bizarre pursuit of absolute spiritual powers, is a very sad one.
Madzibaba Ekedi Mawodzwa is the man at the centre of it all in the case which is being heard at Chief Makope’s traditional court in Zambara Village, Chiweshe.
Madzibaba Ekedi, who is being accused of using seven of his lieutenants in the murderous spree, has denied killing his relatives, including his nephew, whose body was mutilated before he was killed.
Madzibaba Ekedi and his gang are said to have gone into hiding when Chief Makope ruled that the police should be involved because these were murder cases.
The stuff, which has emerged at the village court, is gory.
The gang is said to have allegedly tied up Madzibaba’s nephew at his shrine in Kuwadzana and they mutilated him, with Madzibaba allegedly cutting off a portion of his buttocks, collecting his blood in a bottle and then proceeding to perform rituals with the blood.
According to the traditional court submissions, things took a turn for the worse when the spirit of his late nephew possessed a member of the Mawodzwa family.
The spirit was demanding the return of the blood which it claimed Madzibaba Ekedi and his accomplices had allegedly shed in that murder.
The Mawodzwa family sought help from another religious leader, Madzibaba Cloud Chifamba, who told them he could only help them in the presence of a chief.
The family then consulted a sangoma in their village who also referred the matter to Chief Makope during the cleansing ceremony.
What concerns us is that this is not an isolated case involving a Madzibaba, the so-called pursuit of spiritual power in which the lives of human beings end up being sacrificed.
We have the Madzibaba Ishmael case, which is before our courts of law, in which people were dying at his shrine in Nyabira and buried without securing the documents as demanded by the law.
All this is sickening and we urge authorities to take a firm stance against these Madzibabas who are abusing their positions, within the religious ladder, to inflict all this misery on our people.
The arrest, and prosecution, of Madzibaba Ishmael showed that these men are not above the law and we appeal to our police officers to pursue others, like Madzibaba Ekedi, so that we send a powerful message to others.
Religious leaders should not abuse their place to abuse others.
They are supposed to offer guidance and protection to their religious folks and not use them as pawns in their dark arts, including the pursuit of the so-called spiritual powers.
The sad thing is that there are many devoted Madzibabas out there who are really religious and lead their folks in an exemplary way.
Sadly, their good work is being overshadowed by these rogue Madzibabas.
