THIS is a very BIG week for Freeman who will host his maiden HKD Music Festival at Alex Sports Club on Saturday.
The music star will also use the big stage to unveil his latest album.
There is an expectation that this will be the biggest show that Freeman has held in his musical career.
He has also even shifted base and moved to the biggest field at Alex Sports Club.
This is the field which was used to host the record-breaking Doek & Slay show, which attracted more than 11 000, at the same venue.
This was also the field which was used to host the Castle Braai when it was held at Alex Sports Club.
So, the organisers of Freeman’s HKD Musical Festival are very confident that they will have a record-breaking attendance on Saturday.
We can understand that because it appears to have attracted some of the best artists we have under one roof.
We wish Freeman well and we believe that he deserves his success.
But, of course, we have our concerns.
The brutal assault of a fan by some security personnel at his show at the weekend has already led to a fierce backlash online and is providing a negative angle to the countdown to the HKD Musical Festival which Freeman and his team do not need.
Freeman was right to quickly come out and make it clear that the security personnel, including those who assaulted the fan, were not part of his team but were provided by the promoters of the show.
He said he didn’t think the fan would be attacked and he was shocked and saddened by the incident.
Freeman has responded to the incident.
He said he did not support what the security personnel did and he accepted all the negative comments online in which he was being criticised for what those security details did.
He said he should have intervened and stopped the security men from assaulting the fan but things happened quickly and he did not have the time to do so.
Clearly, some of his fans are not happy and we are not happy too.
However, we are encouraged by his response and his show of remorse and criticism of that savage attack.
That shows he understands that it’s not acceptable that fans are savagely attacked at his shows.
He understands that without those fans, he will not have the star status that he has now.
We hope this will be a lesson to the promoters, and other artists, that the fans who come to their shows should not be attacked.
Yes, there is a need to protect stars like Freeman but there are civil ways of dealing with it.
Those security guys should have just confronted the fan, ensured they kept a distance between him and Freeman and escorted him off the stage.
Hopefully, we won’t see a repeat of that on Saturday.
