EVEN as the rain came down at the Glamis Arena on Sunday, the party continued as the Mega Doek & Slay event lived up to expectations with a record crowd.
The last Doek & Slay party at Alex attracted more than 25,000 women.
It was very clear that this one at the Glamis Arena surpassed that number by a country mile and conservative estimates put the figure between 32,000 to 35,000.
Even when the weather deteriorated in the afternoon leading to traffic chaos, nature could not dampen the spirits of thousands of women who came for the Mother of All Parties.
The organisers called it the Mega Party and that is what it turned out to be.
The Glamis Arena is a bigger venue than Alex Sports Club, the traditional home of these all-women parties.
The mega show, which was headlined by Jah Prayzah, gave the women their Last Dance this year.
The organisers said they were blown away by the huge attendance.
The December show is usually the biggest, it is the culmination of the shows which would have been held around the country throughout the year. Women in fashion topped it up with statement pieces, stunning doeks, and stylish straw hats. Baba
Baba Harare, known for his bold and unapologetic style, was marking his return to these all-women parties.
He performed topless and his energy was infectious as he managed to get the crowd moving with his unique blend of traditional and modern music.
Mai Chisamba showed up at the event with words of encouragement to the ladies.
One of the women, who spoke to H-Metro, said the rains could not stop them from having a good time.
She said it was the therapy that they needed as they go through a lot in their homes.
The Doek & Slay party has now become the biggest show in the country.
It’s a brand that has been accepted by thousands, if not millions, of women throughout the country.
The numbers keep rising and we believe that if the mega December show was held in a stadium, like Rufaro, it will fill the venue to capacity.
That is a massive statement.
We feel it is important for us to also thank the police, and their sister agencies, for ensuring that there were no major incidents at this huge event.
It’s not easy to ensure that such an outdoor event goes smoothly and ends without any major violent incidents.
One could tell that the police had made their homework and knew that the attendance would be huge and they deployed many officers to ensure that they eliminated the risk of violent disturbances.
A lot of credit should also go to the thousands of women who turned up for the show.
They showed that they were there just for the fun and, despite a lot of alcohol being consumed, they did not lose their senses to plunge into violent activities.
