EDITORIAL: WILL WE GET A CLASSIC ON SATURDAY?

THE domestic Premiership’s Big Three football clubs—Dynamos, Highlanders and CAPS United — all won at the weekend.

The trio are the most successful football clubs in the country.

For years, they dominated the domestic football scene with Dynamos winning 21 league championships, Highlanders winning seven league titles and CAPS United winning five league championships.

However, none of the Big Three have won the championship in the last nine years. It’s the longest barren run, without any of the three teams, winning the league title.CAPS United were the last to be crowned champions in 2016.

However, as a group, their presence in the domestic Premiership has been guaranteed for all these years except in 2005 when Dynamos faced the threat of relegation, going into the final game of the season.

This season, though, has been different.

For the first time in the history of the domestic Premiership, all the three clubs have found themselves facing the threat of relegation.

DeMbare face the biggest threat as they have found themselves stuck second-from-the-bottom of the table for some time now.

The arrival of coach Kelvin Kaindu has, however, given the Glamour Boys hope that they can survive the chop this season. They have found their touch and their performance in the past few games has been encouraging with the club posting some impressive wins.

Their strikeforce, which was blunt and was the worst in the league, appears to have found its teeth and they are scoring goals again.

Kaindu is an experienced coach and his dismissal from his job as Bosso coach this year was a surprise given the decent job he was doing with a squad of players which did not have star players.

He has given the Dynamos players the confidence they were lacking and they are now playing with a swagger which they didn’t have before his arrival. Kaindu will face his toughest test as Dynamos coach on Saturday when he leads his men in their showdown against a Scottland side, who are eyeing the league title, in a Harare Derby. There are some analysts who say that this is likely to be the biggest game which has been played in the domestic Premiership this season.

They also believe that the attendance figures will break all the records which we have seen this season.

It has been a good season for the PSL and their partners so far because we have seen fan interest in their product exploding again after years in which the figures did not look good.

Credit should be given to the likes of Scottland and MWOS for the way they have added to the excitement around the league.

Scottland, in particular, have been brilliant with the way they have conducted their business and flooded the market with their replica jerseys.

This is what football is all about and we hope that Saturday will give us a classic duel between the two clubs and this will add value to the rising interest in our PSL.
