IN a nation navigating its path toward industrialisation and self-reliance, the Education 5.0 model stands out as a bold reimagining of what higher and tertiary education can achieve.
Building on the foundations of the 2024 Heritage-Based Curriculum (HBC), this reform project positions universities and polytechnics not merely as places of learning, but as engines of productivity, innovation, and national development.
As policymakers, educators, and students alike embrace a curriculum that weaves culture, natural endowments, and indigenous wisdom into a modern, skills-forward framework, the country is witnessing tangible shifts: new industries sprouting within universities, startup accelerators producing commercial ventures, and a student body trained to turn ideas into goods and services.
This traces the trajectory of Education 5.0, highlights its milestones, and explains why this approach—centred on teaching, research, community service, innovation, and industrialisation—matters for Zimbabwe’s future and for Africa’s broader knowledge-driven development.
The transformation from Education 3.0 to Education 5.0 marks a strategic reorientation of the role of higher education. Under Education 3.0, the emphasis lay primarily on teaching and research, with community service as a component rather than a driver of growth. Education 5.0 expands this triad by adding two pillars that are deliberately outward-facing: innovation and industrialization.
The model envisions universities as holistic ecosystems where ideas are continuously tested, refined, and scaled into products and processes that benefit communities and national economies.
The HBC, introduced in 2024 and running through 2030, anchors Education 5.0 in Zimbabwe’s rich cultural heritage, natural resources, and indigenous knowledge systems.
By drawing on local endowments, the curriculum seeks to cultivate citizens who possess relevant skills and values while contributing to the nation’s development. The aim is to produce graduates who see themselves not merely as job seekers, but as builders of enterprises, communities, and value chains.
As the Deputy Minister of Primary and Secondary Education Angeline Gata put it during a tour of schools in Mashonaland West and Midlands provinces, the HBC has already begun to yield benefits.
“The Heritage-Based Curriculum is not intended to burden stakeholders; rather, it aims to provide lifelong skills that enhance the well-being of learners.” Her remarks highlight a core principle of Education 5.0: learning should be practical, sustainable, and empowering for everyday life and long-term prosperity.
One of the most striking aspects of the ongoing reforms is the way schools and learning centres are using local resources, innovation, and skills to generate income.
Deputy Minister Gata noted that several projects initiated under the HBC were generating income for the schools to alleviate funding challenges.
In an era when educational institutions often face funding gaps, the capacity to create self-reinforcing revenue streams through student-led projects and community partnerships can be a game-changer.
It signals a shift from dependence on external funding toward a model where education itself becomes an engine of economic resilience.
The broader narrative emphasizes that education should produce tangible outputgoods and services that contribute to the nation’s GDP and to the livelihoods of families and communities.
Education 5.0’s emphasis on industrialisation and innovation helps ensure that such outputs are scalable, sustainable, and aligned with national development priorities.
Zimbabwe’s higher and tertiary education sector has become a focal point for industrial growth through the creation of new industries within universities and polytechnics. Government figures describe the establishment of more than 16 new industries across tertiary institutions, a statistic that signals a deliberate pivot toward science, technology, manufacturing, and applied research as core university functions. This aligns with the National Development Strategy (NDS1) and Vision 2030, which frame knowledge as a critical asset in the drive toward a knowledge-driven economy.
The practical outcomes extend beyond the factory floor of universities. Students themselves have become entrepreneurial agents — launching more than 100 start-ups in recent years, with many moving toward commercialisation. This entrepreneurial ecosystem within higher education reflects a shift away from traditional academic silos toward an integrated model that blends learning with production, problem-solving, and market-oriented innovation.
The ongoing projects under HBC and Education 5.0 illustrate the spectrum of what an education system can produce when guided by a mission to contribute to the nation’s economic transformation.
Medical oxygen, nitrogen, and semen for artificial insemination: Students at Chinhoyi University of Technology have engaged in producing essential medical and agricultural inputs, reflecting a fusion of health, agriculture, and biotechnology sectors within the higher education ecosystem.
Value-added products from natural resources: Initiatives producing marula wine, baobab products, and masawu juices demonstrate how local flora and agro-resources can be transformed into value-added goods for domestic and export markets.
The University of Zimbabwe’s initiative to manufacture number plates and the Midlands State University pathology lab illustrate how academic institutions can provide critical services and infrastructure in partnership with public and private sectors.
Institutions such as Lupane State University and Gwanda State University host Agro Innovation Parks that serve as hubs for agricultural research, entrepreneurship, and scalable innovations that can improve yields, incomes, and food security.
Pathology and diagnostic capacity: The MSU’s National Pathology Research and Diagnostic Centre demonstrates how university-driven research facilities can enhance access to essential services and reduce dependence on overseas options.
The leadership from higher education policymakers and legislators such as Parliament’s Portfolio Committee chair Dr Thokhozani Khupe recently affirmed support for Education 5.0 principles and the shift toward graduates who are prepared to drive productivity and innovation.
“We have witnessed over 16 new industries within universities and polytechnics, a testament to transitioning from academic institutions to engines of innovation and economic activity,”she said.
Dr Khupe expressed her pride in the advancements made through innovation hubs across State universities, emphasising that these institutions are not only producers of solutions, but also generators of patents, incubators of startups, and creators of employment, particularly in critical sectors such as agriculture, health and renewable energy.
Education 5.0 is framed as a comprehensive strategy to align education with the country’s developmental needs. It seeks to bridge skills gaps with a curriculum that emphasizes practical capabilities, problem-solving, and innovation; connect learning with production, ensuring that students graduate with demonstrable competencies that contribute to the economy; leverage local endowments and indigenous knowledge to create competitive products and services, thereby strengthening value chains; and build a knowledge-driven economy that complements, and is complemented by, broader macroeconomic and industrial policies.
As leaders indicate, the reforms are designed to be iterative: curricula are re-evaluated and reconfigured to reflect evolving skills demands, technological advances, and the country’s strategic priorities. The aim is not static reform but a dynamic system that continually recalibrates to empower graduates to address critical skills gaps and respond to the needs of industry and society.
The Education 5.0 framework fosters a culture of collaboration across universities, industry, and communities. It encourages students to identify real-world problems and co-create solutions with industry partners, government bodies, and civil society.
This approach is essential for cultivating graduates who can navigate complex value chains, manage innovations from concept to market, and contribute to economic diversification. This ecosystem also supports the Government’s broader ambition of a knowledge-driven economy aligned with Vision 2030.
In this context, universities function as both incubators of ideas and producers of goods and services that provide employment, stimulate domestic markets, and improve public goods and services.
Despite the progress, the path to full realisation of Education 5.0 is not without challenges. Gaps in understanding among some parents and teachers about their responsibilities remain a concern.
Deputy minister Angelline Gata also emphasised the need to raise awareness about the curriculum and ongoing projects so that all stakeholders understand what the HBC entails and how it feeds into Education 5.0.
Ensuring effective teacher training, distribution of learning materials, and investment in digital infrastructure are critical to sustaining momentum and ensuring that the first Heritage-Based Curriculum 5.0 examinations can be rolled out smoothly.
Moreover, there is a need for robust metrics to measure impact. While the creation of new industries and start-ups within universities is encouraging, policymakers and educators will require clear indicators for student outcomes, employment creation, productivity gains, and contributions to national development.
Establishing transparent evaluation frameworks will help sustain political and public support and ensure that investments translate into tangible benefits for learners and communities.
Zimbabwe’s Education 5.0, rooted in the Heritage-Based Curriculum and anchored in the nation’s development imperatives, represents a sophisticated and ambitious attempt to connect learning with production, culture with innovation, and classrooms with communities.
The movement recognises that education is not an end in itself but a powerful means to build a resilient, knowledge-driven economy that can adapt to global changes while preserving local identity and natural resources.
As the country continues to roll out its reform agenda, the impact of Education 5.0 will be measured not only by new industries and startups but by the day-to-day improvements in the lives of learners, teachers, and families.
The emphasis on lifelong skills and the focus on equipping learners with the capabilities to contribute meaningfully to the well-being of their communities, signal a decisive shift toward an education system that serves both people and the nation.
If Education 5.0 succeeds and the early signs are promising it will demonstrate that a nation can transform its educational architecture into a dynamic engine of economic activity, social progress, and cultural pride.
