Egypt will be gunning for nothing but a victory when they meet Ghana in the third round of the 2018 Fifa World Cup (Caf) qualifying tomorrow.
The Group E encounter is set to take place at the Borg El Arab Stadium in Egypt’s second largest city, Alexandria.
Kick-off is at 6:00PM.
The Pharaohs of Egypt beat Congo-Brazzaville 2-1 away thanks to goals from Mohamed Salah and Abdallah Said in their first group E game which was played last month.
As a result the North African giants climbed to the top of Group E with three points – two ahead of Ghana and Uganda respectively.
The Pharaohs will once again look to their star midfielder Salah, who netted four goals in the recent 2017 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifying.
The AS Roma winger is most likely to terrorise the Ghanaian defence on Sunday as he looks to inspire his nation to another victory.
Egypt head coach Hector Cuper spoke about the physical state of his players and their intentions ahead their titanic clash with Ghana.
“Everyone is in a good physical state and we only miss Mahmoud Kahraba and Ahmed Hassan Koka. It is great to have such a group of great players under your management,” Cuper said.
“We understand the importance of the game to the Egyptians, the players are focused on getting the victory and winning the three points.”
Meanwhile, Ghana will hoping to record their first victory of the group when they lock horns with a confident Egypt side on Sunday evening.
The Black Stars of Ghana were surprisingly held to a goalless stalemate by Uganda at home in the first Group E match early last month.
The stalemate left the West African giants on position two on Group E standings with one point – two behind the leaders Egypt.
Ghana missed their hard-working vice-captain Andre Ayew against Uganda. The midfielder-cum-striker was out nursing a thigh injury.
The West Ham United star is looking to lead the Black Stars to victory in Alexandria in the absence of injured Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan.
Ghana head coach Avram Grant is confident that his charges can emerge victorious over Egypt without their experienced centre forward Gyan.
“I am sure they [Egypt] are happy. Imagine that they entered the game without Salah and Elneny, we would be also happy,” Grant said.
“But if we play like a team we can achieve a good result, we need to show a fighting spirit as a team.”— Supersport.
