NAKAMURA Kyokushin Karate Zimbabwe Branch Chief and country representative Tawanda Mufundisi is upbeat his karatekas will fly the country’s flag high in the three-day South African Open Championships scheduled to start on July 13 in the Eastern Cape.

The respected Shihan presided over a grading process of over 30 fighters in Harare on Saturday and he reckons the sport is heading in the right direction.

Mufundisi said his organisation will send about eight karatekas in different categories to do duty for the country in South Africa.

“We had a grading process for more than 30 karatekas in Harare yesterday (Saturday),” Mufundisi said. “What the fighters displayed shows clearly that as a country we are heading for good times in terms of the sport in the country.

“The grading process was conducted in a largely professional manner and was done as part of our preparations for the forthcoming South African tournament. “We are sending at least eight fighters for the South African tournament. From what we have been witnessing in the local competitions and indeed during grading on Saturday, I am very confident whoever is picked to represent the country will deliver.
