TEARS of joy, warm embraces and cheerful laughter filled the atmosphere at Green Gardens in Bulawayo yesterday as elderly mothers from across Zimbabwe gathered for a special Mother’s Day celebration hosted by the Spa Community Trust.
The touching event was organised to honour elderly women and remind them that they remain cherished, valued and remembered by their children living both at home and abroad.
For many of the mothers who attended, the occasion became more than just a Mother’s Day commemoration, it was a rare opportunity for companionship, recognition and healing.
Women travelled from different parts of the country, Harare, Masvingo and Gwanda, to take part in the celebrations, which created a warm environment where they shared stories, meals and laughter while making new friendships and lasting memories.
In an interview, Mrs Sthabiso Gama expressed heartfelt gratitude to her son, Evolution Gama, who is based in the United Kingdom, for making it possible for her to attend the event. “It is because of my son that I am here, and I love him so much,” she said.
“Despite knowing that I am sick today, he called and said, ‘Mom, go meet other people and enjoy yourself’.”
Mrs Gama said the event gave her strength and comfort, adding that spending time with other mothers helped her feel loved and appreciated.
Throughout the day, the venue echoed with music, prayer and conversations as elderly women reflected on motherhood, family and the importance of unity within communities.
As the celebrations continued, the event transformed into a powerful reminder of the importance of honouring elderly women whose sacrifices have helped shape families and communities over generations.
For Mrs Regina Nyoni from Bulawayo, the day carried deep emotional meaning as she described the gathering as memorable and touching, saying it was encouraging to see mothers being appreciated and celebrated.
“We are losing too many young people to drugs, and as mothers, it pains us to watch families and communities being destroyed. We must continue guiding, supporting and praying for our children so they can choose a better path,” said Mrs Nyoni.
She added that motherhood remains a blessing that should always be treasured and respected.
“It should always be a reminder that giving birth to a child is a blessing from God,” she said.
The mothers also took time to encourage one another, exchanging words of hope and support while reflecting on the challenges facing families and communities today. As the programme unfolded, each mother received gifts and flowers courtesy of their children as a sign of love and appreciation.
The thoughtful gestures added to the emotional atmosphere, with many women expressing gratitude for being remembered and celebrated on such a special occasion.
