grants them authority to contest in the upcoming harmonised elections. In a Press statement released yesterday, PSC said once the aspiring candidates’ papers were accepted by the nomination court, the Commission would deem them to have retired or resigned from service.
Acting secretary in the Public Service ministry Mr Nicholas Moyo said they had received a lot of inquiries from civil servants who want to take part in the elections.
“We have received a lot of inquiries from civil servants who want to contest in the elections,” he said.
The majority of staff in PM Morgan Tsvangirai’s office have expressed interest in taking part in this year’s harmonised elections on an MDC-T ticket with some of them having been already endorsed to represent the party during primary elections held recently.
Reports say there are also a number of civil servants who want to contest the polls on a Zanu-PF ticket.
In its statement, the Commission said civil servants who wish to contest in the election must apply to the ministry through the head.
The PSC said members who wish to become candidates for election in the forthcoming harmonised elections should fulfil certain procedures that include;
“a) For election to local authority or rural district council or provincial council, the PSC said members must apply to the commission for authority through the head of the ministry.
b) The commission notifies member of response in writing. The commission may grant member permission to seek election in local authority or rural district or provincial council, declare that member has ceased to be a member of the public service with effect from the date the commission grants authority,” said the PSC.

On the procedures for member of the public service seeking election to Parliament, the PSC said the member must also apply for authority from the commission through the head of the ministry.
“Member of the public service is deemed to have resigned from the service with effect from date of acceptance of his nomination by the nomination court,” the commission said.
President Mugabe is expected to announce the election dates soon, after the Supreme Court directed that he proclaims the date before end of July.
This followed an application by Harare man Mr Jealousy Mawarire in the Supreme Court seeking an order directing the Head of State and Government and Commander in Chief of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces to proclaim the election dates.
