Zimbabwe will next week hold harmonised elections, that will see millions of people casting votes for their preferred candidates, whether presidential, parliamentary or councillors. Although elections affect children, they are often not involved in the process. Well, it is of note that we would like to remind all of us on how to behave before, during and after the elections.
We remind all adults out there that children are the future and they should not do anything that may compromise children.
Stay at home
Home is a haven for children, and that is where our parents and guardians have invested towards our safety.
Before, during and after the elections, don’t be caught up in the streets, just stay at home.
Let us use the time to study, after all, schools were closed early.
Keep away from strangers
Do not associate with people you do not know during this period. When parents and guardians have gone to vote, thieves will be on the prowl.
So don’t let strangers into the house. If there is any suspicious activity, dial 911, that is, call the police.
You could get sexually abused, so don’t leave anything to chance.
Look after the young ones
We just got to be responsible! Keep young children away from swimming pools and wells. Ensure they are never out of sight.
They should not come into contact with medicine, they could abuse it and fall ill. Do not make fires, or if you do, make sure you put it out.
Stay away from politics
Children are usually used by politicians, who take them to their rallies.
They are made to carry banners and wear T-shirts.
But this is election period, and if anything happens, you could get hurt.
So stay away from politics, you cannot make a difference, because you cannot vote.
Use social media responsibly
Guys, with all the time we will have this holiday period, some will be glued on social networks. Facebook, Twitter and WhatsApp, among others. Adults may post hate speech, but do not respond to it. Some may call for demonstrations, but just ignore it.
That is no place for children. It will become a permanent record, and will tarnish your image for life.
