A HWANGE man who thought he could make a quick buck from copper cables will now spend a decade behind bars after being nailed for sabotaging electricity infrastructure.
Shelton Nyoni was caught red-handed in the early hours of 5 June at Inductoserve Logistics, where he had cut and destroyed armored copper cables supplying power to the workshop.
The daring midnight stunt backfired when a resident spotted him sneaking away. A security guard from the company quickly joined in, and together they cornered the would-be looter.
When police swooped in, they recovered 4.5kg of copper cables, along with his housebreaking toolkit of a pick, pliers and a jungle knife.
The damaged property, worth about US$1 200, included a 25mm² four-core cable and two 25mm² single-core cables.
Hwange magistrates didn’t hesitate to throw the book at him, jailing Nyoni for 10 years.
The National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ) warned that tampering with power lines is no small crime as it endangers lives and disrupts vital services.
