A TEENAGE boy from Bulilima District was electrocuted while attempting to steal wires from an electricity pole, police confirmed.
Brian Dube’s lifeless body was found next to an electricity pole. His left hand was still clutching a power cable, and he had bolt nuts in his pockets.
Assistant Inspector Christopher Ngwenya of Matabeleland South police said officers were called to Nopemano Village in the Masendu area of Madlambuzi on Sunday morning.
He told Chronicle: “Officers responded shortly after 8AM but found him already dead. We’re still gathering circumstances surrounding the incident.
“We have, however, linked his electrocution to an electricity pole, which he was discovered lying close to, and which had been tampered with.”
Dube’s body was discovered by his brother Sisto Moyo who was herding cattle.
Asst Insp Ngwenya said Dube had blisters on his left arm, leg and on his back as a result of the electrocution.
Local councillor Vincent Dube said: “We found him lying close to an electricity pole which had been tampered with.
He was holding onto some electricity wires and in his pockets were bolt nuts, which had been removed from the pole.
“Next to him were tools, which we suspect he used probably attempting to steal the wires because he has a record of stealing from several people in the village.”
Councillor Dube said on the fateful day Dube left his home early in the morning unnoticed with his father’s tools, which he reportedly stole.
Asst Insp Ngwenya urged members of the public to desist from tampering with electricity wires as they risk being electrocuted.
