ELEPHANT LODGE ON FIRE! ICONIC SPOT BURNS DOWN AGAIN

Sikhumbuzo Moyo

ELEPHANT Lodge, once known as Jamaica Inn and famed for hosting international acts like UB40, went up in flames in a raging inferno suspected to have started from a nearby veld fire.

The blaze broke out just after 2PM and by nightfall the Bulawayo Fire Brigade was still battling the roaring flames with four fire tenders and 20 firefighters deployed.

Owner Mr Tony Do Santos watched helplessly as the landmark lodge, situated about 40km along Gwanda Road, was burnt down for the second year running after suffering a similar disaster last year.

“From what we saw, nothing was salvaged,” said fire brigade officials, adding that the value of the property lost is still being assessed.
