A 36-YEAR-OLD man from Malala village in Beitbridge was yesterday fined R3,000 after he was arrested while selling an elephant task.
The tusk is worth $1,100.Gift Singo, of headman Mabidi under Chief Stauze, was convicted on his own plea of guilty to a charge of illegal possessing the tusk when he appeared before Beitbridge resident magistrate, Gloria Takundwa.
He was sentenced to two months imprisonment with an option of paying a fine of R3,000.
The elephant tusk weighing 4,5kgs, was forfeited to State as part of the sentence.
Prosecutor Jabulani Mberesi said sometime in November, Singo got possession of an elephant tusk.
He said on Wednesday, Singo tried to sell the tusk to willing buyers in Beitbridge.
Police got a tip off from members of the public and visisted Malala on the same day and located Singo at the business centre.
After interrogations, Singo led the police officers to his house where the tusk was found hidden in one of his rooms.
Singo was then requested to produce documents authorising him to deal with elephant tusks and failed to do so.
Earlier this year, a Gweru man was jailed for nine years for the illegal possession of a rhinoceros horn.
