SEASONED table tennis players Vikram Singh and Tinotenda Fambira are expected to resume their rivalry at the 2024 edition of the Harare Table Tennis Open tournament at Ellis Robins High School from tomorrow until Sunday.
The 49-year-old Singh is the defending champion and will face challenges from other veterans in Tatenda Mumvuma, Brain Chamboko, and Tinashe Duri among several others.
Also expected to take part is the African Penholder Morgan Charamba and Jaison Mugwaku.
In the women’s section, Ashley Dhlamini and Vimbai Makuvaza are expected to battle it out for the floating trophy.
The tournament will have several categories like under-10, 12, and 21 boys and girls section, open men and women as well as the open doubles.
Mutsawashe Clinton Chiremba, the interim Harare Table Tennis Association secretary general, said they are happy to be hosting this year’s tournament.
“It is the major table tennis tournament in the Harare Metropolitan Province and is open to players from all other provinces. A lot of players and table tennis enthusiasts from the country’s 10 provinces and the SADC region are expected to grace the tournament.
“We are happy that tit is coming at a time when table tennis is expanding in Zimbabwe as a sport. It is the fastest-growing indoor game in the world and it is a huge industry that can provide huge opportunities to the youths.The sport cuts various social divides such as age.
The championship brings people together and is mainly concerned with the grass-roots development of sports in the province.
“Last year we had a successful tournament despite facing sponsorship challenges,” said Chiremba.
