THE Environmental Management Agency (EMA) has applauded residents of Entumbane and Cowdray Park in Bulawayo for adopting a system of identifying and bringing forward people found littering in the suburbs.
In an interview on the sidelines of the donation of 10 refuse bins by the Makokoba Seventh Day Adventist church in Makokoba on Wednesday, EMA Bulawayo provincial environmental manager Mr Descent Ndlovu said the residents in the two suburbs were co-operating with the agency resulting in improved general cleanliness in the areas.
“In both suburbs, we have seen a marked decrease in the number of people littering because other residents are monitoring and informing us on who is throwing garbage at undesignated areas,” he said.
Mr Ndlovu, however, expressed concern over residents in Makokoba whom he said have turned the suburb into one of the dirtiest in the city.
He said EMA will continue to arrest people who litter the suburb and urged the residents to copy how Entumbane and Cowdray Park have managed to deal with the issue.
“EMA will continue to arrest irresponsible citizens who throw garbage at undesignated areas. Makokoba is known as the dirtiest suburb in the city but residents have to work together to change that stereotype,’’ he said.
Pastor Dinginotho Khumalo from the SDA church said the donation to Makokoba was an indication of how much the church loved and appreciated the community.
Makokoba Residents Association spokesperson Mr Dingaan Ndlovu said although there were a number of small business operating in the area, it was up to the residents to ensure that they keep the suburb clean.
