THE Environmental Management Agency (EMA) has started its 30-day clean-up blitz in Hatcliffe, Glen View and Glen Norah, clearing waste dumps and road servitudes.
The initiative features awareness-raising activities aimed at encouraging the public to desist from dumping litter in open spaces or on the streets.
The move follows the recent release of funds by Treasury to EMA to purchase refuse collection trucks and manage solid waste in Harare.
Plans are underway to create a Statutory Instrument allowing EMA to arrest urban councils and individuals guilty of polluting the environment or failing to maintain a clean environment.
Environment, Climate, Tourism and Hospitality Industry Deputy Minister, Barbara Rwodzi, said:
“It’s actually very disappointing, but we must act to ensure that our nation is clean and that Harare returns to its former glory as the Sunshine City.”
In a statement, EMA said residents should reduce the amount of waste generated at household level.
“Let us desist from dumping waste at undesignated sites so that these dumps do not recur,” EMA said.
“Let us reduce the amount of waste we generate at household level.
“Separate waste at source and take recyclables to your nearest waste sorting sight.”
