EMA engages traditional leaders on veld fire preparedness

The Environmental Management Agency (EMA) has intensified efforts to curb veld fires through community engagement, holding a strategic meeting with traditional leadership in Mbembesi, Umguza District, ahead of the high-risk veld fire season.
The engagement brought together EMA officials and Chief Ndondo to discuss veld fire preparedness and measures aimed at protecting communities, livelihoods and the environment during the veld fire restriction period.
EMA said traditional leaders play a critical role in environmental protection as custodians of communal land and are key partners in raising awareness and enforcing responsible land management practices.
The meeting focused on strengthening collaboration between environmental authorities and local communities to prevent veld fires, which continue to pose a serious threat to forests, wildlife, agricultural land and property across the country.
EMA urged communities to remain vigilant and observe all veld fire regulations during the restriction period, emphasising that prevention remains the most effective way to reduce fire outbreaks and their devastating impact.
The agency reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with traditional leaders and other stakeholders in promoting environmental stewardship and achieving zero tolerance for veld fires.
“Together, we can protect our environment, preserve our natural resources and safeguard future generations from the destructive effects of veld fires,” said EMA.
The engagement forms part of ongoing nationwide awareness campaigns aimed at strengthening community participation in environmental conservation and veld fire prevention.
