AS part of efforts to raise awareness on litter disposal, Environmental Management Agency has embarked on clean-up campaigns in and around Mutare.
In an interview, EMA provincial environmental manager, Mr Kingstone Chitotombe, said they had been working with local authorities to ensure that waste was being managed well from generation to disposal as their 2016 theme is, ‘No to litter, No to waste’
Within the course of this week, EMA managed to raise awareness through holding clean-up campaigns at Wengezi, Chakohwa, Hotsprings and Nyanyadzi.
Said Mr Chitotombe: “It is our duty to order local authorities who are failing to deliver service to residents to do so.”
He said Mutare City Council had embarked on a programme to clear dumpsites and residents should co-operate.
“Vendors should keep their sites free of litter, vending sites, ranks, major highways and beer halls are some of the areas where litter is accumulating. We are appealing to everyone to desist from dumping litter,” he said.
Mutare residents have welcomed EMA’s initiative of carrying out awareness campaigns in and around Mutare.
A Chikanga high-density suburb resident, Chipo Mumera, said: “We will play our part and ensure that we do not throw litter everywhere. We hope the council will play its part as per their promise.
“The council is failing to adhere to their waste collection schedules leading to accumulation of solid waste dump sites across the city. That should be looked into.”
Another resident, Mr Cliff Maunze, hailed the issuing of tickets to those found throwing litter everywhere was the right thing to do as his would go a long way in ensuring clean cities.
The offence of littering comes with a $20 fine and Mr Chitotombe confirmed that three people were issued with tickets of littering this week.
