SOLUSI Adventist and Thekwane high schools are set to represent Bulilima District at the Matabeleland South Environmental Management Agency (Ema) schools’ debate competition while Empandeni and Phakamani represent Mangwe.
Empandeni and Phakamani earned spots to the provincial finals after emerging tops at the district’s debate competitions held in Plumtree on Tuesday. Last week, Thekwane High School and Solusi High School shrugged off stiff competition from other schools at district competitions that were held at Matjinge High School in Bulilima.
The schools debated on the topic: “Wetlands are fragile and sensitive ecosystems on which human interference should be banned.”
In the Mangwe schools competitions, three schools battled it out on the affirmative side which saw Empandeni walk away with a floating shield and a cash prize. On the non-affirmative side, Phakamani emerged champions also winning a floating shield and money.
Sarudzai Tigere of Empandeni High School was named the best speaker. The schools debate competitions are organised by the Ema annually to develop environmental awareness among young people. Through the debates, Ema seeks to ensure that information on topical environmental issues such as waste management, veld fires, degradation and climate change is disseminated.
Last year’s debate competition was won by St Patrick’s and Mtshabezi High School. They were each awarded $700.
