EMA takes waste management gospel to churches

THE Environmental Management Agency (EMA) has encouraged churches to help promote waste management methods such as recycling.

EMA has since engaged the Zimbabwe Council of Churches (ZCC) to help reduce the rapid rise of waste in Zimbabwe. The engagement through a workshop that was held in Bulawayo on Tuesday saw pastors and some church leaders from different denominations coming together to try and look for solutions on how best waste can be managed.

In an interview, EMA’s Acting Principal Officer Environmental Education and Publicity, Mr Liberty Mugadza, said there are a lot of businesses that one can start using waste.

“People who are into the recycling business at the moment are making big money. If you could look at scrap and plastic collectors, they are making money and cleaning the environment at the same time,” he said. Mr Mugadza challenged churches to have small projects where they will be managing waste.

He said congregants must also be encouraged to do the same even in their homes. ZCC Co-Coordinator Mr Kudzainishe Dhliwayo challenged EMA to visit churches after services and directly train congregants instead of concentrating on church leaders.

He said the ZCC will ensure that what they learnt will be incorporated on their Environmental Commission Desk so that every church is challenged to practise waste management. Mr Dhliwayo said the church group’s Environmental Commission Desk ensures that churches come together to protect the environment.

“We hope once EMA gets funds to help start some initiatives, we will also get these funds so that we can boost our waste management businesses,” he said. – @flora_sibanda.
