THE Environmental Management Agency (EMA) is conducting a two-day media workshop in Matabeleland South to equip journalists with knowledge and skills to improve environmental reporting.

The capacity-building workshop, being held on Wednesday and Thursday, seeks to deepen media practitioners’ understanding of Zimbabwe’s major environmental challenges and strengthen reporting on issues affecting the environment.

Journalists from various media houses, EMA officials, local authorities and parastatals are attending the workshop.

Addressing participants, EMA environmental education and publicity manager and spokesperson Mrs Amkela Sidange said the training would help promote sustainable natural resource management, reduce pollution and strengthen environmental management in Matabeleland South.

“Through this workshop we seek to achieve enhance Capacitation of media practitioners to accurately, effectively and responsibly communicate environmental issues, policies, legislation and sustainable practices, thereby strengthening public awareness, promoting environmental accountability and supporting sustainable natural resource management in Zimbabwe.

“We believe if we have a media fraternity that is informed and equipped with the right knowledge then the information will be disseminated to the people thereby educating communities,” she said.

Mrs Sidange said environmental protection was a shared responsibility that required legal compliance, informed public participation and practical action.

She said topics to be covered during the workshop included Zimbabwe’s environmental management framework, the mandate of EMA and its sister departments under the Ministry of Environment, Climate and Wildlife, as well as major environmental challenges affecting the province.

The training is expected to provide journalists with a stronger foundation for accurate and informed environmental reporting.
