EMA warns unlicensed gas traders

The Environmental Management Agency (EMA) is cracking down on unlicensed LP gas retailers operating near residential areas.

LP gas is becoming increasingly popular as an alternative to electricity, which is subject to load-shedding, and as a means of reducing the need for firewood.

However, some retailers are operating without licences and using unlicensed suppliers, which the agency believes poses a danger to the public.

EMA is urging all LP gas traders to approach their local authority for licences and appropriate trading spaces before applying for a hazardous substance licence from the agency and a licence from the Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority.

EMA’s environmental education and publicist officer, Maxwell Mupotsa, said they were concerned by the rising number of these illegal gas traders, as this poses a danger to members of the public because LP gas is hazardous and needs to be treated with caution.

He urged people to regularly service their gas tanks and stick to stipulated conditions of use.
