Emakhandeni family cries ‘foul play’ as man succumbs to injuries at home

A family in Emakhandeni is seeking answers after their relative allegedly succumbed to injuries they believe he sustained after an attack in the late hours of Monday night.

The man, identified by his family as Daniel Phiri, was found by his mother lying in the yard of their Emakhandeni home around mid-night, visibly intoxicated.

According to the older brother Mr Anderson Phiri, she asked him to help her pick up Daniel and get him inside the house.

“He was soaking wet and shivering from the cold as it was raining when we found him lying in the yard and helped him into the house. I got an extra blanket to keep him warm throughout the night but we didn’t notice that he was injured,” said Mr Phiri.

Efforts to wake Daniel up proved futile early Tuesday morning. The family called the police and an ambulance.

“It is only in the morning when we discovered that he had a deep cut on the side of his head and some bruises on his body. The blood must have been washed away by the rain when he was laying in the yard. We believe something sinister happened to my brother and we are seeking answers as a family,” he said.

One of his jean trouser pockets had reportedly been cut off and a satchel that he carried at all times was missing.

He was 33 years old and was known to survive on odd jobs in the city centre.

Bulawayo police are yet to comment.
