A 35-year-old man from Bulawayo’s Emakhandeni suburb allegedly killed his six-year-old son and went on to commit suicide by hanging himself following an undisclosed dispute with his wife.
Residents close to the family said Tinashe Zindoga of House Number 1736 in Emakhandeni and his son, Tadiwa were found hanging from the roof of the family house last Friday morning.
“We do not believe that a six-year-old could commit suicide. We do not know what really happened but the two were found hanging in the house on Friday,” said a resident who preferred anonymity.
“We believe this man killed the boy first by hanging him and also went on to commit suicide by also hanging himself.”
The residents said before the fateful day Zindoga had a misunderstanding with his wife, who could not be identified, over a yet to be established issue.
“What we know is that Zindoga had a dispute with his wife in the past few days. We cannot explain how the boy got involved in the dispute and how he got killed,” said another resident.
“He used to stay in Luveve with his wife and came to the family house here in Emakhandeni early last week. We do not know what happened but he was found dead with his son by his brother Jabulani Zindoga who had come to visit them on Friday at about 10am.”
A Chronicle news crew visited the house yesterday and found the gates locked with neighbours saying the family, which is believed to be from Mhondoro, had gone to their rural home to bury the two.
“There is no one in the house as you can see that it is locked. The family went to Mhondoro for the burial. We are not sure when they are coming back,” said the family’s neighbour.
Newly elected councillor for the area Mr Pilate Moyo said he was saddened by the incident, which comes barely a week after three family members from the same area were burnt to death in a mysterious fire.
He said when he went to the house on Friday afternoon the police had already taken the bodies to the United Bulawayo Hospitals for a post-mortem.
“This is another sad incident. Two people, a man and his son were found hanging. When I went there on Friday the bodies had been removed.
“From what the residents are saying the couple stayed in Luveve suburb where it was renting a house. They then had a dispute and we do not know how Zindoga came with his son to Emakhandeni,” said Mr Moyo.
Bulawayo provincial police spokesperson Inspector Mandlenkosi Moyo confirmed the incident.
“We are investigating a case of murder where the suspect is also deceased. We suspect that the man killed his son before hanging himself,” said Insp Moyo.
