Other winners on Sunday included musicians Rihanna and Nicki Minaj and actor Jamie Foxx.
The show featured performances by a number of artistes including Robin Thicke, Stevie Wonder and Mariah Carey.
R&B singer and former Gap Band lead vocalist Charlie Wilson was presented with the lifetime achievement award by Justin Timberlake.
The pair then performed alongside Pharrell Williams and Snoop Dogg in tribute to Wilson’s career.
Rapper Kendrick Lamar was nominated for eight prizes winning the awards for best new artiste and best male hip-hop artiste.
He spoke to “all my little homeboys and homegirls back in the city” about growing up in poverty before beginning his career in music.
“You’’re looking at me on TV right now,” he said. “This is living proof that you can do anything you put your mind to.”
The 17-year-old Olympic gymnast Gabrielle Douglas said she was “shocked” to be named sportswoman of the year as well as winning the young stars award.
Rap duo Macklemore & Ryan Lewis were named best group, while best collaboration went to A$ap Rocky, featuring Drake, 2 Chainz and Kendrick Lamar, for “Problems”.
“Django Unchained” star Jamie Foxx won the best actor award while Kerry Washington from television show “Scandals” was voted best actress.
Drake’s “Started at the Bottom” won video of the year, one of the night’s top awards. He also won the viewers’ choice award after being nominated for 12 prizes.
The BET Awards took place in LA and were hosted by actor and comedian Chris Tucker.
