It’s not every day that older, curvier women with families get the chance to walk the catwalk for a good cause.
Modelling competitions, whether for charity or prize money, are typically reserved for young, slim, and childless models.
However, the upcoming Bulawayo’s Hottest Momma fashion show is breaking the mold, offering women aged 21 to 50 with an opportunity to showcase their confidence and style on stage.
Auditions for this ground-breaking event will be held on Saturday, at Barham Green Hall in Bulawayo, with the main event set for October 26. Event organiser Patricia Wilson shared that the show is aimed at raising funds for patients with chronic myeloid leukemia, a type of blood cancer.
“As Cotton Candy Entertainment, we’ll be holding auditions for Bulawayo’s Hottest Momma on October 12 at 2pm. The auditions are open to all moms aged between 21 and 50 years, and we’re excited to see many women come through and try out,” said Wilson.
“Our primary goal for this show is to raise funds for chronic myeloid leukaemia patients. The audition process will help us select a specific number of contestants for the main event. We encourage all interested ladies to attend the auditions in blue jeans, white tops, and bring along a pair of high heels.”
Wilson further explained that the main event will feature a variety of activities, including performances by top DJs and artistes.
“This year’s awareness campaign takes the form of a fashion show, where we’ll crown Bulawayo’s Hottest Momma. We have a fantastic line-up of DJs, including Otis Frazer, Victor Bravo, Kimble Rogers, VJB Barry, and Diliza. Bulawayo’s very own female rapper Barbz will also perform, along with other artistes,” Wilson said.
“There are many exciting prizes to be won. As a mother of 10, I’ve always dreamed of participating in a competition like this. Many women lose confidence in themselves after having children, but this is a great chance to show that we still look amazing and feel empowered.”
Wilson added that a representative from the CML Zimbabwe Trust will give a talk during the event to raise awareness about leukemia, its symptoms, and the available treatment options in Zimbabwe.
This initiative is particularly significant, as it follows the story of Loretta Williams, who survived leukemia after being diagnosed 21 years ago. Despite being told she had only five years to live, Williams is now a living testament to overcoming the disease. She has joined forces with the Barham Green community and the Combined Community Development Fund (CCDF) to raise funds for leukemia patients through the upcoming show.
