YOUTHS in Manicaland Province are set to benefit from programmes being spearheaded by a local organisation aimed at equipping them with life and sports skills.
After School Hoops of Zimbabwe has committed itself to promote sporting activities in schools as well as assist vulnerable pupils with learning materials in marginalised areas of the province.
The organisation’s founder David Mlambo said the Building Bridges Through Sport programme seeks to nurture basketball talent and develop other skills in the youths to enable them to reach full potential in class and on the sports fields.
“The aim of the programme is to develop basketball and life skills while teaching the youths to also give back to the community. We are also keen to develop sportspersons from grassroots level and empower them both physically and psychologically through the power of sport and education.
“Through such programmes, young people will achieve goals such as professional development by gaining knowledge of the sport. We are also emphasising on education and reaching out to marginalised communities to create role models for the future generations,” he said.
Mlambo said they have already mobilised resources to refurbish Sakubva, Dangamvura and Rusape basketball courts.
This, he added, helps to keep young people occupied while preventing delinquency and substance abuse.
Mlambo said nurturing athletes armed with education helps them to make informed and good life decisions, thereby moulding responsible youths.
