Zimbabwe will next week join the world in commemorating the Global Entrepreneurship Week which will run from November 18 to 24.
GEW is a worldwide movement of entrepreneurs whose goal is to encourage and motivate people to unleash new ideas and turn them into reality.
This annual event is commemorated over one week by entrepreneurial experts, policy-makers, education practitioners and politicians.
Empretec Zimbabwe signed up as the country host for Global Entrepreneurship Week in 2010 and will host this year’s event in collaboration with BOOST Fellowship Enactus Zimbabwe, Junior Achievement Zimbabwe, Zimbabwe Youth Council as well as Zimbabwe Opportunities Industrialisation Centres.
GEW was launched in 2008 as a result of Enterprise Week UK and Entrepreneurship Week USA 2007.
Since its launch more than 10 million people from 102 countries have participated in entrepreneurial-related activities during the Week.
In a statement, Empretec said the GEW is expected to commemorated in140 countries this year.
“Last year, presidents and prime ministers from 20 countries supported GEW while 93 ministers from 54 countries participated by speaking at activities during the Week, filming statements of support or otherwise endorsing the national campaigns in their countries.
“GEW creates mass participation and exposes people of all abilities to quality entrepreneurial experience; from school students and university graduates to employees and the unemployed,” the company said.
This year’s event will be held under the theme “Take a Step Forward” which is a challenge for entrepreneurs all over the world.
Empretec said the week would be marked by a street march in Harare. Various young entrepreneurs will also show case their products and services at an exhibition to be held as part of the commemorations.
The will also be awarded a chance to present their business plans to a panel of judges. Exhibitors will be further assessed on their plans with awards being given to the winners.
This is expected to run parallel with the Entrepreneurship Conversations sessions where respected industry and commerce speakers will present on topics ranging from legal aspect of running a business, taxation, labour, legislation, financing and manufacturing issues.
Throughout the week, Empretec said the youth would be liaising through e-commerce with other youths who are part of the GEW Worldwide will share experiences and learn more about entrepreneurship.
The African Women Entrepreneurship Programme Zimbabwe Chapter will also be launched during the week and Empretec Zimbabwe will re-launch the association for its alumni to foster business linkages between the aspiring entrepreneurs and the older and successful entrepreneurs.
The event would be close with an awards ceremony that will honour outstanding young entrepreneurs.
