End-of-term exams are almost here

Passing school examinations can bring a sense of joy and accomplishment for every learner at school.

It is a moment of validation for all the hard work, dedication and determination put into studying and preparing for the exams. Passing school exams also opens up a world of possibilities and hope for a bright future.

It paves the way for further academic pursuits, future career opportunities and personal growth. It also acts as evidence that one has the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in one’s chosen field of study. Additionally, it sets one on a path towards achieving one’s goals.

Failing a school exam can be a devastating experience for learners. It can lead to disappointment, frustration and even despair.

For many learners, their academic performance is closely tied to their self-esteem and sense of worth.

As the mid-year exams approach, learners are beginning to feel the pressure to perform well.

The pressure and anxiety are even more for learners who will sit their Zimbabwe School Examinations Council (Zimsec) and Cambridge tests this year; that is, next term.

To ease this stress and ensure success, it is important for learners to develop effective study habits and strategies.

One of the best tips to excel in mid-year exams is to start studying on time. Learners should revise the material covered in class well ahead of the exams to avoid last-minute cramming and ensure thorough understanding of the subject matter.

Remember, procrastination is the thief of time. Learners should create a study schedule that helps them allocate enough time to review all the material learnt. Candidates should review their class notes and other study materials to refresh their memory on the topics covered in class.

For learners who are doing both Cambridge and Zimsec syllabuses, making use of the recommended learner guides from the Cambridge School Support Hub is recommended.

Through these guides, candidates can see all the syllabus objectives for every subject. They can then highlight the objectives that are still unclear to them, which can be extremely helpful.

In this regard, learners can seek additional support from the respective teachers and peers if they are still struggling with any concepts or topics already covered.

Candidates can also practise using past exam papers to get a sense of the exam format, question types and level of difficulty. This will help them familiarise themselves with the exam structure, timing or paper duration and also identify areas where they need further study.

Study materials and notes should be kept in one place to avoid confusion and ensure easy access when needed.

Organising study space can help improve focus and productivity.

Forming study groups with other focused classmates to review and discuss difficult topics together is of paramount importance. This collaborative approach can help in understanding concepts better and also provide the opportunity to ask questions.

Learners should be encouraged to prioritise their well-being. This comes through having enough sleep, eating nutritious meals and exercising regularly to maintain their physical and mental well-being.

A healthy body and mind will support better academic performance. While studying, it is also important to take regular breaks to give the brain deserved rest and prevent burnout. Short breaks can help improve concentration and retention of information.

By following these tips and developing effective study habits, learners can feel more confident ahead of their mid-year exams. Remember,  academic success is not just about how much one studies, but how one studies.
