END THE SCOTTLAND CURSE Bosso’s 12th man targets first league win at BF

BULAWAYO is set for a football weekend loaded with intrigue, emotion and high stakes as league leaders Scottland FC invade a Barbourfields Stadium that could once again become Highlanders’ greatest weapon if the Bosso faithful pack the stands and unleash the famous Emagumeni roar.
It is a weekend that could define conversations both on and off the pitch. History suggests Sunday’s showdown is unlikely to be straightforward. Since Scottland’s arrival in the top flight, the two clubs have met three times in the league. Scottland won 2-1 in Harare last season before Bosso battled back for a thrilling 2-2 draw at Barbourfields. Their first meeting this season, played at Rufaro Stadium on April 6, ended in a goalless stalemate. Highlanders are therefore still chasing a first league victory over the ambitious newcomers.
While the Highlanders family grapples with difficult financial questions during a crucial Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) on the day of the big match, Benjani Mwaruwari’s men have the daunting task of stopping the most in-form side in the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League.Scottland are arriving in the City of Kings and Queens breathing confidence. The Harare outfit has gone nine league matches without tasting defeat and, remarkably, has not conceded a single goal during that run. Nine matches. Nine clean sheets. A defensive wall that no opponent has managed to crack.
Packed with seasoned campaigners and match winners, the log leaders have combined steel at the back with ruthless efficiency going forward. Former Warriors captain Knowledge Musona continues to dictate games with his intelligence and finishing ability, while Khama Billiat remains one of the league’s most dangerous attackers.
At the back, dependable central defenders Kevin Moyo and Peter Muduhwa have been the foundation of a side that has conceded just 10 goals and kept nine consecutive clean sheets. They top the table with 51 points from 22 matches, are unbeaten away from home this season.

The hosts, however, also possess enough quality to trouble the league leaders. Veteran defender Andrew Mbeba brings composure at the back, captain Darlington Mukuli leads by example, Kudakwashe Mahachi remains capable of producing moments of magic, exciting youngster Roy Nyamande offers pace and energy, while Nigerian striker Benjamin Adeogun will be eager to end Scottland’s remarkable clean-sheet streak.
But if there is one factor statistics cannot measure, it is the power of a packed Barbourfields Stadium. Few venues in Zimbabwe generate the electricity that surges through BF when Bosso fans sing from the first whistle to the last.
The famous Bosso faithful transform Emagumeni into a cauldron of noise, waving black-and-white colours, beating drums and roaring every tackle, pass and attack. That relentless backing has often inspired Highlanders to find another gear, turning pressure into belief and making life uncomfortable for visiting teams.
Highlanders may not have been convincing this season, yet they have lost only twice all campaign and remain one of the country’s biggest football institutions whose supporters expect nothing less than victory every time Bosso take to the field.
Bosso have drawn a staggering 13 league matches this season, more than any other side, earning them the unwanted “Drawsolona” tag. Seven of those draws have come at Barbourfields, where they have won only three of 11 matches despite losing just once. Those numbers show Highlanders are difficult to beat at home but have lacked the cutting edge to convert dominance into victories.
Sunday presents the perfect opportunity to bury that nickname. If the famous 12th man turns up in full voice, those fine margins that have repeatedly produced stalemates could finally swing Bosso’s way.
As club members deliberate over Highlanders’ financial position during the EGM, the players have a golden opportunity to give the Bosso faithful something to smile about by becoming the first side in 10 league matches to breach Scottland’s watertight defence.
A victory over the log leaders would not only reignite Highlanders’ campaign and silence the “Drawsolona” critics, but would also provide a timely morale boost for a club navigating difficult waters off the field.
Scottland, however, have other ideas.
Coach Norman Mapeza’s charges know every point is precious as they edge closer to their dream of lifting the league title.
Another victory at Barbourfields would strengthen their grip on the championship and reinforce their growing reputation as the team to beat.
Elsewhere in Bulawayo, FC Platinum visit Bulawayo Chiefs at Luveve Stadium.
The miners are also battling inconsistency after drawing 13 league matches this season, while Chiefs return home desperate to bounce back from a 2-0 defeat to Simba Bhora.
