This year’s near-perfect motorsport season is finally ending after a series of successful events on the local motor racing calendar with only one event remaining — the famous 3-Hour Endurance Race.
The race is one of the biggest motorsport events of the year and this year it has been lined up for December 7 at its traditional venue – the Bulawayo Motorsport Park.
Aiden White, one of the event’s organisers, said they were expecting entries to start rolling in soon.
“Entries have not started coming in as yet… Normally we know these things closer to the date and around two weeks before the event, we will have confirmation of entries,” said Aiden.
But the organisers have promised to end the year with some rubber burning, high adrenaline vibes on December 7.
The 3-Hour Endurance Race usually attracts the country’s top motor racing drivers and bikers from Harare and Bulawayo.
Competitors from South Africa have, in the past years, been part and parcel of this exciting motor racing event.
Harare’s motor racing ace Mano Zevgolis is the defending champion after having swept to victory last year.
In fact, Zevgolis has turned the race into his personal property since he won it for the first time in 2021.
Last year, Zevgolis came out of semi-retirement to sweep the opposition aside to grab yet another podium finish.
Last year in December, Zevgolis once again proved that he is a dominant force in local motor racing events when he blew the opposition away during the race.
It was brutal, beautiful, terrifying, exhilarating and just the most brilliant experience as Zevgolis, who came out of retirement before the race, recorded back-to-back victories in the demanding race which marks the end of the motor racing season each year.
Last year saw a fantastic day of racing during the 3-Hour Endurance Race.
There was an amazing turn out of very well-prepared cars and Zevgolis was a well-deserved winner in his Honda Civic.
Now a legend in the local motor racing world, it was simply breathtaking as Zevgolis put in another solid show.
It was a nail-biting biting finish to the event with the Toyota Supra closing on every lap whilst the Honda’s front left tyre started de-laminating.
The Honda eventually had a blow out on the last lap and crossed the finish line on three tyres.
That was the third consecutive year Zevgolis, in his hp lubes/Castrol Honda CRX, had won the 3-Hour Endurance Race despite some tough competition.
He has, over the past few years, won almost every race in the drags, main circuit racing and 3-Hour Endurance Race, and is now a legend of the sport in Zimbabwe.
It could not be established yesterday whether Zevgolis will be going back to Bulawayo to hunt for another title, but if he does, then fireworks will be the order of the day on that day.
He will definitely make jaws drop during the December 7 motor racing extravaganza.
The Bulawayo Motoring Club has saved the best for this last motor racing event of the year.
The 3-Hour Endurance Race is like a last man standing match, the strongest man with the strongest car will last 3 hours and will take the trophy. Endurance racing is a form of motorsport meant to test the durability of the cars and the endurance of the drivers.
Teams therefore have to cover the most laps within the given time period.
