many will remember how last year on December 21 the world was predicted to come to an end, with different theories formulated on exactly how this would happen resulting in a sudden halt in both human and animal existence.
And now as we look back to all predictions or prophecies of the end of the world, it appears all of them were mere hoaxes meant to instill fear and hopelessness in people.
As we enter 2013, life continues as usual, and there are no hints or indications of a sudden halt in life or a catastrophic natural disaster that would destroy all life on earth as predicted earlier by some theorists.
While all doomsday predictions have never materialised, the Christian Holy Bible points to the fact that the world will indeed come to an end, although it does not mention the exact date when this will happen.
Instead, the Bible in Luke 21:25 talks of signs which will be visible in the sun, moon and stars to give an indication that the world is coming to an end.
Other signs mentioned in the Bible include earthly calamities, wars and increasing levels of evil or sin which are strong indicators that the world will soon come to an end.
“And you shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that you be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet.” (Matthew 24:6).
Looking at the subject of the end of the world from a Christian perspective, it also appears that that is when Jesus Christ will return to earth to take his followers to Heaven.
To shed more light on this subject, the Bible in Matthew 24:36 and 44 explains that Christ’s coming is inevitable but the exact time or day when this will happen is unknown to Christ himself, the angels of God or even men.
“But of that day and hour knows no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only. Therefore be you also ready: for in such an hour as you think not the son of man comes.” (Matthew 24:36, 44).
Matthew 24:30 and Revelations 1:7 goes further to explain that Christ’s reappearance at the end of the world will not be a secret affair since every human being will be able to see Him.
I like some gospel tracks by our Zimbabwean musicians such as Pastor Charles and Amai Olivia Charamba and Donna Chibaya Tagarira who illustrated through music how this world will be destroyed when Christ reappears, as taught in the scriptures.
In a song titled “Sodom and Gomorrah”, Pastor Charamba prays to God asking for divine inspiration to help him understand the scriptures and also divine favour so that he can be counted among the righteous when Christ returns at the end of the world.
“Vamwe tichiri vadiki pashoko renyu, tibatsirei baba hatirizive zuva renyu, tibatsirei baba chatinongoziva muchauya . . .” (Some of us are still young or ignorant in scriptures help us Father. All we know is that you will come again.) reads part of the lyrics to this song.
In her song titled “News Bulletin” Mai Charamba says the day or hour when Christ returns on earth is unknown to men and that his reappearance will take place unexpectedly.
“The day is not known unto men the hour is not known unto men. He is coming like a thief in the night oh yes he is coming” are some of the lyrics to this song.
In her song “Noah”, Donna compares the destruction of the earth by floods during the Old Testament of Noah’s time and a similar occurrence that will take place at the end of the world when God destroys the world with fire to wipe out sin.
The Bible teaches that when the world comes to an end, Satan and his followers will be destroyed by fire resulting in the purification of the earth and the establishment of a new earthly Kingdom ruled by Christ (Revelations 19:20, 21:1,2,7,8).
Whichever theories or predictions may be created around the idea of the end of the world, the word of God remains clear on this subject where it says the world will end unexpectedly, when Christ returns again for the second time to destroy sin.
