A chess club has been formed in Entumbane suburb of Bulawayo. It is among a number of initiatives by the community aimed at fighting substance abuse in the suburb by keeping youths occupied with the mind game. Entumbane Chess Club secretary Mehluli Moyo said their objective was to nurture talent in the suburb.
“We have decided to form a chess club at Entumbane because the game of chess is for the disciplined, which can be used to fight substance abuse and even lower the crime rate in our ‘hood,” said Moyo.
The suburb is said to be among those with youths alleged to be into the abuse of cough mixture (ngoma) and others.
Kenani Phiri is the chairperson, Moyo is the secretary, Michael Sibanda is the treasurer while Ngqabutho Gumede is the resource mobiliser.
So far 25 members have been registered by the club. Moyo said they are appealing to well wishers to sponsor the club with material and resources to keep them viable.
“We are appealing to well wishers and the corporate world to assist us with material such as chess boards, timers and anything that can assist us as a chess club,” said Moyo.
He said their target is to introduce the sport in schools in the township.
“We want to give back to the community, so we have made a plan that as soon we get settled we want to train kids at local schools, as our idea is to turn the average players to grand masters.
“We are also planning to become a member of Bulawayo Chess Association so that we have our players competing in the league, we want them to raise the name of Entumbane high,” he said.
