Eric Moyo’s burial set for Tuesday: Body to be repatriated tomorrow

THE late gospel musician Eric Moyo’s body is expected to be repatriated from South Africa to Zimbabwe tomorrow with burial set for Tuesday.

This comes as his life will today be celebrated both in Zimbabwe and South Africa.

There will be a memorial service in Sandton, South Africa and another at the Zimbabwe International Exhibition Centre (ZIEC) in Bulawayo.

“Just like in South Africa where Joyous Celebration is holding a memorial service, we will also have one for Eric here in Bulawayo so that friends, family and fans can say their proper goodbyes to their loved one.

“This will then be followed by the burial service  set for Tuesday,” said family spokesperson, Ms Fanele Moyo.

She said the Bulawayo memorial service will be at the ZIEC’s Hall 3 from 1.30pm to 5pm.

“Members of the church, friends, and relatives in Bulawayo are invited to this special memorial service that will be held in honour of Eric and there will be lots of music as choirs, soloists and worship teams will minister,” said Ms Moyo.

She said all things being equal, Moyo’s body should arrive tomorrow (Monday).

Eric died on Thursday due to a reported brain bleed after spending some time at a Port Elizabeth hospital in South Africa. He was 42.

His claim to fame was his triumphant MNet East and Southern Africa Idols contest in Kenya in 2008 that would see him carve a niche that would change the gospel music genre.

Because of his vocal ability, he was able to join the well-known South African gospel group Joyous Celebration Choir and co-found the gospel group Vocal Extraordinairé alongside Mkhululi Bhebhe and Thembelani Theodore Mdlaziba.

These individuals used to sing at church together when they were in high school and later decided to establish a formal religious musical group in 2013.

He leaves behind an illustrious career which saw him transform lives and rub shoulders with the who’s who of the gospel music circuit. — @MbuleloMpofu
