Ethiopia admit to fielding ineligible player

against them.

“We have evaluated the situation and we came across the issue that we made a mistake,” Sahlu Gebrewold, chief executive of Ethiopia’s Football Association, said. “We accepted the allegation that this was inappropriate. There won’t be an appeal from us being lodged.”

Ethiopia are now almost certain to be docked three points, meaning South Africa would get a reprieve and may still be able to qualify for the 2014 finals in Brazil but the Ethiopians can still qualify for final qualifiers by holding the Central African Republic in their last group match in September.

If they are docked three points, those would be awarded to Botswana. Ethiopia would then have 10 points, South Africa 8, Botswana 7 and the Central African Republic 3.

Ethiopia stand accused of selecting an ineligible player in their win over Botswana earlier this year, and could be docked three points, reigniting Bafana Bafana’s chances of making it to the finals in Brazil.

Currently Ethiopia top Group A on 13 points, five ahead of Bafana, who play their final group match against Botswana, at home, on September 7.

Ethiopia conclude their campaign against the Central African Republic at a venue yet to be determined. — Supersport.com
