EU reps meet Zambian ruling party candidate

edgar lunguLusaka – Zambia’s governing party candidate in this month’s presidential election on Friday held a closed-door meeting with European Union (EU) officials in Lusaka’s posh Kabulonga area.During the meeting, which lasted almost two hours, Edgar Lungu of the Patriotic Front assured the EU officials that the country would not change investment policies, a Sapa correspondent reported.

After the meeting, Lungu told reporters that the discussions were cordial.

“The meeting went very well,” he said.

“They were interested to know how we’re doing. I’ve explained to them that there’ll be continuity from where our late president Michael Sata left.”

Sata died after on-and-off illnesses on 25 October 2014 at a London hospital.

Lungu indicated that he had assured the EU that Zambia would remain a favourable investment destination and that once elected after the January 20 polls, his priorities would be to improve health and education facilities.

He also promised the EU he would ensure that both investors and Zambia benefited from investment in the country. Lungu also said he would help alleviate poverty among the country’s populace.

Meanwhile, leading opposition candidate Hakainde Hichilema of the United Party for National Development has promised free education from primary to tertiary level if he wins the election. — Sapa.
