The Government has expressed gratitude to Ambassadors of European Union member states for their collaborative efforts with Zimbabwe in combating gender-based violence (GBV).
This appreciation was voiced by Women Affairs, Community, Small and Medium Enterprises Minister, Monica Mutsvangwa, at a meeting in Harare yesterday.
She said the partnership between Government and the EU resulted in funding and the construction of safe shelters for GBV victims.
“I want to thank the various EU country ambassadors for establishing funding mechanisms aimed at reducing and eliminating GBV in our communities,” she said.
Minister Mutsvangwa said the creation of safe homes and one-stop-centres has been vital in addressing GBV throughout the country.
“My Government continues to benefit from partnerships with European nations, which have brought hope to victims and survivors of GBV,” she said.
EU Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Mr Jobst Von Kirchmann, reiterated the European bloc’s commitment to supporting Harare in its fight against GBV.
“Ending GBV remains our top priority, and we commend Zimbabwe’s efforts to combat this issue, which affects many nations,” he said.
Ambassador Kirchmann also noted that the EU has valued its collaboration with the Ministry of Women Affairs, Community, Small and Medium Enterprises and intends to seek additional funding to enhance initiatives against GBV through the establishment of one-stop shelters.
Yesterday’s took place at a time Zimbabwe has joined the world in observing the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence campaign, which began on Monday and focuses on investing in prevention strategies.
