Have you ever lost your dog and not known where to start looking for it, seen an animal in shocking condition and not known who to call to help it or seen someone commit an act of cruelty against an animal and not known what to do about it? Call (020) 63679The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) is a non profit organisation which relies entirely on the donations of generous people to operate.
We were officially registered as a welfare organisation in Mutare in 1968.
Although our official role is to prevent cruelty, as there is no official City Council Pound in Mutare, all animals trapped by Council which have strayed onto the roads are brought to us.
Owners who want to find their animals should be sure to visit our premises on St Helens Drive and find out if we have their animals before replacing them. Call (020) 63679
It is an offense to do any of the following:
Cruelly beat, kick, ill treat, override, over drive, or torture any animal or cause any animal to be so used
Drive or use any animal which is so diseased or so injured or in such a physical condition that it is unfit to do any work
Cruelly or unnecessarily tie up or confine any animal or cause or permit any animal to be tied up or confined
We have the capacity to hold approximately 50 dogs, 30 cats and generally have goats and chickens and ducks on our premises too.
Our team of 3 staff work tirelessly to look after these animals that may in some cases be in extremely bad condition when they arrive in our care.
One of our main roles is to educate the public and our children about animal care.
This year we managed to visit both the Dangamvura Primary School and The Sakubva Primary School.
The children got a change to interact with one of our SPCA dogs who went with us.
Dr Kurai Pride Kapondo (The Provincial Epidemiologist for the Manicaland Province) was able to join us on this occasion to also speak about the dangers of rabies and the steps to take should you be bitten by a strange dog or suspect an animal may have rabies.
It is in fact the SPCA that deals with any suspected rabies cases in the city.
If you see an animal that is behaving strangely and you are unsure of Call (020) 63679 immediately!
SPCA is open 7 days a week and offers the following services:
Dipping (everyday) $2 a dog – prevent your dog getting Bilharzia and needing expensive treatment — bring him/her for dipping
Boarding $3 per day per dog or $2 per day per cat — this includes the food for the animal (please consider bringing your dog for boarding if she is in season rather than allowing her to have puppies you may not want)
Re-homing of animals (looking for a pet?)
Dealing with suspected cruelty cases
Temporary housing of stray dogs whilst trying to locate the owners
We welcome both school field trips and anyone who would like to learn more about our organisation to contact us on (020) 63679
